Endoscopy is a procedure that involves the use of an endoscope, a special instrument with a camera attached that allows the doctor to view images of the inside of the body through very small incisions. Sometimes, the doctor uses an endoscope to assist in performing surgery with a laser. There are many benefits to surgery that is performed using a laser and an endoscope. Most notably, there is less damage to the body's tissues because no large incision is cut through the skin and muscles. This leads to smaller scars and, in most cases, a quicker recovery. Different surgeries can be done using endoscopy, including the removal of cancerous areas of the colon and the removal of a diseased gallbladder. Certain types of sinus and knee surgery also can be done using endoscopy.
